Charles W. Dort, II, 88, died Friday evening November 23, 2018 in his home in Ipswich after a long illness. He was the husband of Mary (Cunningham) Dort. Born in Ipswich on March 21, 1930 he was the son of the late Archibald and Joan (Scourletis) Dort.
Mr. Dort was a life-long resident of Ipswich. He was raised and educated in Ipswich, he was a graduate of Ipswich High School, Class of 1948. Mr. Dort attended and graduated from U. Mass Amherst with a degree in forestry. He was a veteran of the Korean War having served in the Army. He achieved the rank of 1st. Lieutenant and was a tank commander at Ft. Hood in Texas. Mr. Dort was a teacher who would teach high school biology in Ipswich and later in Marblehead for 32 years, he was also a driver’s education instructor for many years.
Mr. Dort loved to ski, he was an expert skier and was a member of the National Ski Patrol. As a teacher in Marblehead he led several high school ski trips to Europe. He was an avid outdoorsman. He was a member of the Ipswich Fish and Game Club and served as a board member. When he was a teacher in Ipswich he coached the Dory Racing team, he coached a team that competed in Nova Scotia, Canada. Mr. Dort built his home in Ipswich by himself in 1963. He was a man who could do anything.
Mr. Dort is survived by, in addition to his wife Mary of Ipswich, his 4 children: Charles Dort, III of Ipswich, Anne Francis also of Ipswich, Christopher Dort and his wife Letitia of FL, Peter Dort and his wife Paula of MA. He is also survived by his 6 grandchildren: Charles Francis of MA, Marc Francis and his wife Caitlin also of MA, Jason Dort and his wife Melissa of CA, Megan Dort of FL, Bryce Dort and Olivia Dort, both of MA. Mr. Dort is also survived by his 2 great-grandchildren: Maxwell Dort and Wilder Dort, both of CA, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Richard Dort formerly of MA, his sister Eleanore Garland also formerly of MA and his son-in-law Donald Francis formerly of Ipswich.
A funeral service with military honors will be held Thursday November 29th. at 6:00 P.M. in the Morris Funeral Home 45 North Main Street, Ipswich. Visiting hours will be before the funeral Thursday from 2:00 to 6:00 P.M. in the funeral home, relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Burial will be private and at a later date.
