Ipswich – Fr. William J. Guerrette, 87, retired Catholic Priest of the Archdiocese of Boston, died Wednesday, February 28, 2018 in the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston after a long illness.
Born in Salem on July 26, 1930 he was the son of the late Louis E. and Irene L. (Belanger) Guerrette. He was raised and educated in Salem. He entered the priesthood and was ordained in 1955. His list of parish assignments began in 1955 at St. Joseph’s in Medway. Later parishes included, in order, St. Ambrose in Dorchester, St. Theresa in Billerica, St. Thomas in Salem, St. Mary of the Hills in Milton and St. John in Canton. He would then serve as Chaplain at Ste-Chretienne Academy in Salem and would be assigned to St. Camillus in Arlington. He would be a graduate student at Boston College, during that time he lived at Sacred Heart in Roslindale. He was the Chaplain at the Northeast Training Center in Topsfield. He was a Juvenile Court Chaplain for the District Court in Newburyport. Fr. Guerrette was an Adminstrator at St. James in Boston and he was assigned to St. Peter in Lowell. Fr. Guerrette would be the Pastor at St. Stanislaus in Ipswich from 1984 until his retirement in March of 1995. He also worked with troubled/court committed juveniles for the MA Dept. of Youth Services Region 4 Office in Salem and Haverhill in the 1970’s as Placement Supervisor for adolescents in group homes in and out of state.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Fr. Guerrette will be celebrated Tuesday, March 6th at 11:00 A.M. in Our Lady of Hope Church 54 Linebrook Road, Ipswich. A reception will follow the Mass in the church hall downstairs, all are respectfully invited. A burial will be held privately in St. Mary Cemetery in Salem. Fr. Guerrette will lie in repose Monday, March 5th from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. in Our Lady of Hope Church in Ipswich. In lieu of flowers please make a donation in Fr.
