James Phipps, Sr. Obituary

Hamilton – James E. Phipps, Sr. died peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday, March 15, 2019  at the Brudnick Center in Peabody after a short illness.  He was predeceased by his wife Lois (Kallman) Phipps, with whom he shared 70 years of marriage.  He was the son of the late Joseph and Beatrice (Kingston) Phipps and the brother of the late Joseph Phipps and the late Walter Phipps.

He is survived by his children James Phipps, Jr. of Ipswich, Sharon Ercha of Ipswich and Jeffrey Phipps and his wife Paula Phipps of Lynn.  He was predeceased by his daughter-in-law Sandy Phipps.  He is also survived by several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and his brother-in-law William “Bud” Kallman of Georgetown.  He was predeceased by his grandson Jason Phipps, formerly of Ipswich.

Jim was a veteran of WWII, serving in the US Navy on the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown CV 10 and the light cruiser USS Houston CL81.  After the service Jim graduated from the apprentice program at GE in Lynn and worked there for 63 years, mainly as a senior planner.

Jim and Lois were residents of Hamilton for more than 55 years and raised their children there.  He had recently moved to Beverly but considered Hamilton his home.

Jim enjoyed traveling to Europe and went on many trips driving around the country and Canada with his wife Lois.

He was an unforgettable character with a great sense of humor and he charmed people with his stories of growing up in Lynn, childhood summers spent in Canada, and his adventures during WWII.  People met him as strangers but parted as friends.

Grampa Jim enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.  He loved taking them on adventures, making milkshakes for them, and just spending time with them.

His devotion to family, unique sense of humor and booming voice will be greatly missed.

A Celebration of Jim’s life will be held Saturday, March 30, beginning at 7:00 P.M. at the VFW Post# 1093. 110 County Road, Ipswich.  Relatives and friends are respectfully invited.  There will be no visiting hours.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Disabled American Veterans   www.dav.org .  Assisting the Phipps family is the Morris Funeral Home of Ipswich.  To send a condolence to the family, please go to:  MorrisFH.com .
