Ipswich – Joanna M. Barry, always known as Joan, passed away at Beverly Hospital on the early morning of May 17, 2019 after a brief illness. She was the loving wife of the late Raymond J. Barry. They shared over 57 years of marriage.
Joan was born in Salem, MA to the late Dr. Charles H. Hogan and Johanna (Carr) Hogan. Joan graduated from St. Chretienne’s High School and attended St. Elizabeth’s College in Morristown, NJ.
On August 26, 1950, Joan and Ray wed and settled into their home on Pequot Road in Marblehead, MA. There, they raised five children. Joan always enjoyed reading, gardening on a less than flat landscape and enjoyed working at Stowaway Sweets in Marblehead and as an assistant to the late Dr. John McNeil in Swampscott.
In 2007, Joan and Ray moved to the town of Ipswich where Joan continued to garden and make new friends. It also allowed them to help take care of their granddaughters and granddog, Russell.
Joan leaves behind her daughter Peggy Belanger and her husband Jim, Lynn, MA, her daughter Maura Costa and her husband Andy, Harwich, MA, her son Michael Barry and his wife Priscilla, Vienna, VA, and her daughter Lisa Lynch and her husband Tom, Ipswich, MA. She was the mother of the late John P. Barry.
Her beloved grandchildren include Craig Belanger and his wife Courtney, Ryan Costa, Kelly Barry, Shannon Belanger, Megan Barry and her husband John, Joanna Weibe and her husband David, Caitlin Hargraves and her husband Tim, Carolyn Lynch, and Katie Lynch.
Most treasured are her great-grandchildren, James, Abby, Henry, Daniel, Landon, and Rita. Joan was the sister of the late Mary L. (Hogan) Cummings.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, May 23, 10:00 A.M., at Our Lady of Hope Church 1 Pineswamp Road, off of Linebrook Road, Ipswich, MA. There will be no visiting hours.
