Lorraine Rathe Obituary

Lorraine E. (Bailly) Rathe, 96, a long time resident of Ipswich, died peacefully at the Masconomet Health Care Center on January 27th., 2018. She was the wife of the late Rene Rathe with whom she shared 63 years of marriage. Born in Haverhill, MA on April 21st., 1921, she moved to Ipswich as a young girl and graduated from Ipswich High School in 1939. She was married to Rene in 1939 at St. Stanislaus Church in Ipswich. In addition to raising her six children, she enjoyed baking for friends and family, flower gardening, and playing her piano. She was a lifelong member of St. Stanislaus and Our Lady of Hope parishes and the Catholic Women’s Club. When her children had grown she worked in the kitchen at the Caldwell Nursing Home and then in the cafeteria at the Winthrop School where she was known to the children as “the money lady”. In addition to her husband she was predeceased by three of her children, daughter Patricia Brady, and sons Richard and George. She is survived by her daughters Jane Phipps and her husband Kenny, Mary Murray and her husband Matt, and son Michael Rathe and his wife Marie. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, as well as many great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. A graveside funeral service will be held Thursday February 1st. at 10:00 A,M, in the New Highland Cemetery 29 Town Farm Road, Ipswich. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. There will be no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers please make a donation in Mrs. Rathe’s name to: Care Dimensions Hospice 75 Sylvan Street, Danvers, MA 01923.
