Richard A. Gilbert passed away on Thursday April 19, 2018 after a lengthy illness.
Richard was born on January 22, 1931, and grew up in Haverhill, MA. He served in the Coast Guard from 1950-53, during the Korean War. Richard attended Wentworth Institute of Technology, in Boston and became a draftsman, working at Raytheon and later at GTE, Sylvania in Waltham. He retired from GTE in 1983.
Richard spent his retirement building timber frame buildings in Massachusetts, as well as in Brentwood, New Hampshire. Dick’s interest in the art of blacksmithing led to his work with the New England Blacksmiths Association. Richard took on a leadership role as president of the association for a few years. Dick organized weekend-long meets that gave blacksmiths all over New England opportunity to mentor younger members and share blacksmithing skills.
Richard is survived by his wife Marilyn, his brother Robert Gilbert and wife, Holly; his sister Arlene Moore; his oldest daughter Colleen Comeford; his oldest son Daniel, Daniel’s wife Joanne; son, Thomas; daughter Susan Gilbert and her husband John Sirois. Grandchildren include Amanda, Matthew, Michael, Brigitte and Vivienne.
Richard will be greatly missed by all, who appreciated his deep connection with his community, and his generous contributions to his family and friends.
