Theodora Mavroides Obituary

Theodora (Geanakos) Mavroides, known as Dora to her family and friends, passed away peacefully at Lahey Hospital on August 18, 2018, surrounded by her family and with her beloved husband of 65 years by her side. 

 

Born in Ipswich, Mass. on April 6, 1932 she was the daughter of the late John and Aggeliki Geanakos of Greece. During her childhood she helped her father at the family grocery store, Broadway Variety in Ipswich, along with her brothers, James Geanakos now of Arlington, Va. and the late George Geanakos

 

Dora received her education from Ipswich Public Schools, after high school she took the train into Boston to attend Fisher College school, where she received an Associate’s Degree.

 

In 1951 she met William “Bill” Mavroides at the Ipswich Greek picnic. He Greek danced his way into her heart and they were married on April 19, 1953 in Ipswich. They settled in Ipswich, where she was an active member of the community, including as a teacher’s aid in the Ipswich Public Schools, a member of Alpha Omega Society of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Church, and recently as a volunteer at the Ipswich Senior Center.  She loved Crane Beach, her Monday morning bowling league her annual 4th of July barbecue.  She baked her well-enjoyed baklava and koulourakia for her family and the annual Ipswich Greek picnic.

Dora was a devoted mother to her two sons, George Mavroides and John Mavroides. She is survived by her son John and his wife Joanne of Gloucester, Andrea Mavroides, widow of her late son George.  Her grandchildren, Melissa (Mavroides) Brown and her husband Dana Brown of North Andover, Bill and his wife Kimberly of Ipswich, Matthew Mavroides of Lowell and Stephen Mavroides of Waltham, her much-enjoyed great grandchildren Amanda Brown, Theodore and Felix Mavroides, her nephew Jonathan Geanakos, his wife Patti and their children Alex and Abigail.

 

Dora was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend with a huge heart and an even bigger laugh. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her, but she will always be the sparkle in the ocean for her family and friends.

 

A funeral service will be held Thursday  August 23rd.  at  10:00 A.M.  in the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church   8 Lafayette Road, Ipswich.  Burial will follow in the New Highland Cemetery  29 Town Farm Road, Ipswich.  Visiting hours will be Wednesday  August 22nd.  from  4:00 to 8:00 P.M.  in the Morris Funeral Home  45 North Main Street, Ipswich.  Relatives and friends are respectfully invited.    A donation in Dora’s name can be made to:  the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church of Ipswich  P.O.
