Barbara Nikas Obituary

Barbara A. (Solomonides) Nikas, 82, wife of the late Ernest G. Nikas, passed peacefully Wednesday morning September 1, 2021at her home in Ipswich surrounded by her loving family.  Born in Cambridge on July 7, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Joseph A. and Christine (Scourletis) Solomonides.

     Barbara was raised in Lowell until the age of 3 when her family moved to Ipswich where she had been a resident ever since.  She married her husband on September 7, 1956 in the Greek Orthodox Church in Ipswich, Tucker and Barb then made their home in Ipswich and raised their 3 children.  Their home was the hub of the family.  Many celebrations and parties were spent at their home, everyone considered Tucker and Barb as their parents or grandparents.  Barb and Tucker enjoyed their retirement home in Venice, FL for over 10 years before returning to Ipswich in 2018. She was employed by the Executive Office of Health and Human Services for over 30 years located at the Northeast Region of the Department of Development Services, Hogan Regional, in Danvers from 1974 until her retirement in 2004.  She was predeceased by her beloved husband Tucker on September 28, 2018.

     Barbara is survived by her 3 devoted children:  Brenda Nikas-Hayes and her husband John of Westborough, Peter Nikas and his fiancée Anne McLister of Ipswich, Chief of the Ipswich Police Department  Paul Nikas and his wife Jessica Gauvin also of Ipswich.  She is survived by her beloved brother  Arthur Solomonides and his wife Kitty of Newburyport as well as her aunt  Sylvia (Solomonides) Contover of Lowell.  Barbara is also survived by her 5 adoring grandchildren:  Matthew E. Nikas, Noelle Nikas, Ian Hayes, Alexander Hayes and Nicholas DeLoia, her extended grandchildren:  Daniel Markos, Amanda Markos, Michael Foustoukos, Laurie Foustoukos, Matthew Foustoukos, McKenzie Smith and Max Smith, her nephews Joseph Solomonides and Peter A. Nikas and his wife Jan, and many more nieces, nephews and cousins from the Nikas and Solomonides families.  All loved her dearly. 

     Due to the Covid restrictions the family has requested that all funeral services will be private.  Burial will be in the Cowles Memorial Cemetery, 29 Town Farm Road, Ipswich.  In lieu of flowers please make a donation in Barbara’s name to:  the Northeast Animal Shelter, 347 Highland Avenue  Salem, MA  01970.  Arrangements are under the direction of the Morris Funeral Home of Ipswich.  To send a letter of condolence to the Nikas family please go to:  MorrisFH.com .
