DANIEL S. CARTA (“GUIDO”), age 67.
THE MAN, THE MYTH, THE LEGEND
Dan Carta passed away on June 27, 2023 after a hard-fought battle with esophageal and related cancers. Born May 3, 1956 in Methuen, MA, to Sebastiano Carta and Geraldine (Menery) (Carta) Page, Dan was educated in Methuen schools.
Dan was a man of many talents. He was a great cook and had a good singing voice as was evidenced by his friends who witnessed his many Karaoke performances. Frank Sinatra was his hero and Guido sang his songs probably more than any other crooner’s. He was a smart dresser, and loved dressing up in a suit and sporting a soft hat.
Dan was so proud to be of Italian descent that he jokingly introduced himself as Guido, and the name stuck. In fact, many of longtime Ipswich friends never knew him as Dan.
He was also proud to be an American, and flew the flag wherever he lived, as well as wearing a pin showing the American Flag on one side and the flag of Italy on the other.
Dan “Guido” loved a good party and especially a good barbecue. He was known for preparing too much food, but no one complained because the food was always so delicious.
Over the years, Dan “Guido” worked for several construction-related companies, as a heavy-machine operator and in other capacities. He learned carpentry and many related skills with friends and on-the-job with employers; and he learned basic electrical skills from his brothers, Joe and Tom. His most recent jobs included working with his best friend, Joe Wright, and helping people clean out their attics and cellars. Many people knew “Guido” for picking up and recycling scrap metal locally, but this was actually something that Dan started doing in the Lawrence area, as a teenager, long before recycling was a household word.
Survived by his sister Kathy Berman and her husband Phil of Amesbury, and his brother Joe Carta and his wife Mary of Methuen; Dan is also survived by many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends too numerous to count. He also leaves his companion of 18 years, Karen Costa of Ipswich, and his best pals Joe Wright and Mark “Sharka” Collum, both of Ipswich. Special thanks to Drew Wile who drove Dan to many chemo treatments.
In addition to his parents, Dan was pre-deceased by his stepfather William (Billy) Page and his brother Thomas (Tom) Carta.
Dan’s family and friends are grateful to Dr Ahmed Safa and his team at Northeast Oncology Associates in Beverly for their kindness and expert care during his struggle with cancer.
Dan hoped you would thank Northeast Oncology Associates and Care Dimensions (Kaplan House) of Danvers for helping him through his last days, by making a donation in his memory. Memorial contributions may also be made to the charity of one’s choice.
In case you are wondering, Dan wrote much of his own obituary. He always wanted to be in charge, and this was no exception.
