Daniel J. Follansbee, 86, of Ipswich, passed away peacefully on November 14, 2023 at Hathorne Hill in Danvers.
Dan was born at home in Newburyport on May 26, 1937 to Joseph and Mary Follansbee, and graduated from Newburyport High School in 1957. He married the late Mary Boylan in 1959 and the two settled in Ipswich. Though Dan was always fond of his hometown Newburyport, and loved visiting over the years to see the changes to the downtown and walk the harbor, he grew to love Ipswich as well.
Dan was a very dedicated. proud, and supportive father to his two children, encouraging them in their athletic and academic pursuits throughout childhood and beyond. He was equally supportive of all Ipswich High School athletes, and enjoyed fostering his passion for sports in others. He was a coach for GALS softball, and volunteered for many years with the Ipswich boys and girls basketball teams and track teams. He was truly an Ipswich Tigers superfan.
Dan was proud to have worked for over 40 years at the same company, Cardinal Health. He started his career as a truck driver and worked his way up to inventory control. He took pride in the fact that he hardly ever took a sick day. After retiring, he enjoyed spending time with his family, volunteering, and playing bingo at the Ipswich Council on Aging.
Dan was known amongst friends and family for his warm, outgoing demeanor and sharp, sarcastic sense of humor. When his grandchildren were growing up, he enjoyed taking them on day trips around New England. Driving home, they would place bets on what time they would arrive home – a surprisingly competitive game that Dan invented to make the long car ride more exciting. Ever the trickster, Dan would slow down or speed up as they were approaching the house, eliciting either cheers or playful groans from the backseat. He was always quick with these lighthearted pranks, or a joke or biting one liner, to make those around him laugh.
Dan is survived by his two daughters and son-in-laws, Marybeth (Follansbee) and Tom Gerrish of Ipswich, and Caroline (Follansbee) and Mike Murray of Amesbury. He also leaves his grandchildren, Mark and Allyson (McCann) Gerrish of Boston, and Briana Gerrish of Cambridge. He was thrilled to have met his great-granddaughter Finley Gerrish, who lovingly called him “Papa Dan”. He also leaves his sister, Joan Reilly, and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate Dan’s life will be held on Monday November 20th. at 10:00 A.M. at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church 54 Linebrook Road, Ipswich. There will be no visiting hours.
