Denise (Cynkus) Leslie Obituary

We sadly announce the passing of Denise Leslie of Lancaster, NH, who left us on April 25, 2026. Born and raised in Ipswich, Massachusetts, Denise touched the lives of many throughout her remarkable life.

Denise graduated from Ipswich High in 1971 and, following her beloved sister and role model Louise, earned her bachelor's degree from Emmanuel College in 1975. She was a dedicated educator, beginning her teaching career at Amesbury High School and continuing at White Mountain Regional High School. Denise was a committed mentor and source of unwavering support in and beyond the classroom. Her kindness and belief in her students inspired generations and left an indelible mark on their lives.

At Emmanuel, Denise formed lifelong friendships with a cherished group of women known as “The Herd." Their bond, built on love, laughter, and steadfast support, spanned over 55 years through milestone birthday destination trips, “Herd Thanksgivings," and shared moments of joy.

Denise’s zest for life was reflected in her love for animals, especially her beloved Labrador retrievers. Her loyal companions, Lily and Lief, brought her boundless joy and comfort all the way to the end.

Denise shared a profound love with her husband, Dixon, and together they explored numerous National Parks and created cherished memories on hikes and adventures. The home they built in East Lancaster, NH was a sanctuary where they surrounded themselves with flowers, watched birds throughout the seasons, and enjoyed the tranquility of the North Country they held dear.

Denise’s warmth, compassion, and humor will be deeply missed. She had a unique ability to make everyone feel loved and supported, always encouraging others to chase their dreams. We honor her legacy by carrying forward her spirit and the kindness and belief she instilled in us.

Denise was preceded in death by her parents, Jennie and William Cynkus, and her sister Louise Cynkus. She is survived by her husband, Dixon Leslie; Dixon’s sons Jason Leslie (Kim) and David Leslie (Julie); “daughter” Chelsea McGee; her grandchildren Owen and Indigo; her brother-in-law Frank Vidmar; her cherished friends in the Herd; and the many students, friends, and loved ones whose lives were forever changed by knowing her.

Services will be held at a later date in Ipswich, Massachusetts. Reflecting her lifelong love of animals and their welfare, the family invites donations in Denise’s memory to:  the Ipswich Humane Group  P.O.
