Helga McCarthy Obituary

Helga McCarthy, 88, wife of the late Raymond McCarthy died Wednesday, February 12, 2025 at her home surrounded by her loved ones. Born in Chabarovice, Czech Republic on March 29, 1936 she was the daughter of the late Ernst Hortig and Marie (Benda) Hortig.

Helga, along with her parents and siblings escaped the war torn country by traveling under the cover of night for many weeks to Germany where they resided until her move to America. Helga started working at a very young age to help support her family. She worked on a farm beginning at age 12 and was a very hard worker. When she moved to America in her early 20’s she started a job as an inspector at a light manufacturer and she went on to work as a seamstress in her later years.  Helga worked hard right up until her retirement.

She married the love of her life Raymond on New Years Eve in 1980. They lived happily in their home in Amesbury for over 40 years. They made very good friends with their neighbors and had a lively social life. Helga loved to garden and had a yard that all the neighbors adored.

Helga is survived by her daughter, Kimberly Casey and grandchildren Kayleen and Brian Casey. She was predeceased by her many siblings who all resided in Germany. She is survived by her brother in law Dennis McCarthy, his wife Brenda, sister in law Joyce McCarthy, and sister in law Lorraine McCarthy.  She was a bonus Oma to Brady and Ella Scobert, Brian Jr, Olivia, Ciara and Declan Murphy. She is survived by her niece Danielle McCarthy and her partner Brian Murphy who had the privilege of living with and caring for her these past few years. She is survived by many nieces and nephews and her best friend Annelise Hutchinson. Helga also leaves behind her German Shepherd Brutus who was always by her side.

Helga was an amazing woman who survived and overcame the hardships of war. She always had a story to tell and loved spending time with her family. Our only regret was not documenting her stories but our time spent together listening to her tales was always the priority.

At this time there will be no memorial services. Helga will be buried in the Spring alongside her husband Raymond.
