James and Elaine Twichell, beloved pillars of their family and community, passed away within one week of each other—James on Friday, January 9, and Elaine on Wednesday, January 14, 2026. Their passing marks both a beautiful ending and a new beginning to the extraordinary love story they shared over 64 years of marriage, a testament to the lifelong bond that kept them always together
James was just shy of his 90th birthday, which would have been celebrated on February 9, while Elaine was approaching her 85th on March 1. Elaine valiantly battled Parkinson’s Disease for the past decade, showing unwavering strength and courage. Their devotion to each other was matched only by their dedication to their faith and community. As active members of the Catholic community, James and Elaine dedicated much of their lives to Our Lady of Hope Parish in Ipswich, MA, and were enthusiastic participants in the local St Vincent De Paul Society.
They are lovingly remembered by their two daughters, Paula MacGauley and Elise Twitchell; four grandchildren, Tina MacGauley, Marissa Budds, John MacGauley, and Devin Twitchell; and two great-grandchildren, Clementine MacGauley and Everson Budds, with another little one expected soon.
James, an Air Force veteran, was known for his love of family and friends, his continuous ability to teach others, and his love of a good Stephen King or Dean Koontz novel. Elaine’s heart was at the center of her home; she cherished her family and friends, delighted in cooking, and cultivated beautiful gardens. Elaine was an avid runner, participating in numerous marathons throughout her life.
James and Elaine’s legacy is one of devotion—to each other, to their family, and to service in their faith community. Their presence will be profoundly missed but their example of love, faith, and strength will inspire all who knew them.
May they rest together in eternal peace together
