On March 12, 2026, the inimitable Joan E. Duda passed out of this life. She was a person of boundless intelligence, deep caring and sharp wit. Across her life’s journey of 91 years, she inspired many with proficient teaching, outstanding athletic skill and constant kindness.
Courageous and practical in equal measure, Joan was a lifelong learner and encouraging teacher. She attended Mount Saint Mary Academy and Mount Saint Mary College in Manchester, NH, completed her Master’s Degree at Southern Connecticut State University and earned her Doctorate of Education at Boston University. She was a mentor to generations of students and colleagues at Salem State University, first as professor and then as department chair and professor emeritus in Sport and Movement Science. She was among the first female leaders in the department, helping create a solid path to scholarship, leadership, coaching and activism
Her spirit of fairness and competition excelled on the golf course, where she won dozens of tournaments in her second career as a golf champion. She traveled to far-off places with her sisters, and created enjoyment with true friends and her beloved dogs at home. Within minutes of being in her company, you were likely the recipient of a well-informed editorial, a knowing glare and a sparkling smile punctuated by her twinkling blue eyes.
Joan’s legacy of perseverance, humor and authenticity will be cherished by those who had the privilege of knowing her. Her life will continue to be an inspiration, testament to the power of education, science, friendship, humor and strong will.
