Julia (Pappas) Burke Obituary

Julia (Paras) (Pappas) Burke, 93, of Georgetown, died Sunday, March 1, 2020 after a brief illness at the home of her daughter and son-in-law while surrounded by her loving family.  Julia was the wife of the late Michael George Pappas and the late Edward P. Burke.  Julie and Ed lived in Florida from the early 1980s until 2001 when they returned to Massachusetts to be closer to family.  In addition to Michael and Ed, Julie was predeceased by her beloved son, George Michael.  Born in Cambridge on August 4, 1926, she was the daughter of the late James and Pansy (Kassaris) Paras.

“Julie” will be remembered for her kind and loving soul, devotion to family and friends, and sense of humor.  Many will recall annual Christmas Eve gatherings at the family home in Ipswich.  There were no invitations sent, friends and family just “showed up.” When they arrived they were greeted by Julie’s warm smile, gentle and kind soul and, of course, a never ending feast.

Known to her grandchildren and many others as “YiaYia,” she never missed her grandchildren Dakota and Peter’s basketball games.  Julie was employed as a waitress and hostess at the former Marguery Restaurant in Ipswich for many years.  She later worked with her husband Ed at the House of Hinlin Photography Studio.

Julie is survived by her son,Jimmie Pappas, and her daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Jim Squires.  She also leaves loving and devoted grandchildren, Dakota and Peter Pappas, Anastasia Verrier, Adam Burke, Courtnie Marion and James Squires.  She is also survived by 6 great grandchildren, many adoring nieces and nephews, 2 step sons, Edward and Alan Burke, her godchildren, Maria Angelakis Gorton, Adrienne DeLuccia and many dear friends, especially Father John and Presvytera Kathy Govostes, Christine Galanis, Wanda Arvanites, Liz, Bill and Katherine Squires, and Skip Savage.  Julie was predeceased by her 5 siblings:  Athena, Catherine, Helen, George and Charles.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, March 6th at 10:00 a.m. at the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church, 8 Lafayette Road, Ipswich.  Visiting hours will be Thursday, March 5th from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the Morris Funeral Home, 45 North Main Street, Ipswich.  Burial will follow in the Cowles Memorial Cemetery, 29 Town Farm Road, Ipswich.  Relatives and friends are respectfully invited.  Julie was a faithful member of the Greek Orthodox Church.  In lieu of flowers, please make a donation, in Julie’s name, to either the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church or the Greek Orthodox Youth Association (G.O.Y.A.), 8 Lafayette Road, P.O.
