Louis W. Provost, 93, husband of Gertrude (Pelletier) Provost, passed away Thursday October 6, 2022, surrounded by his loving family at his home in Essex. He was born on September 9, 1929 in Salem, a son of the late Alfred and Lydia Provost.
Louis had an enduring love of the outdoors which began when he was 12 years old, sailing many trips with his Uncle Fred Normand on a 60’ vessel. He joined the Navy Reserves after high school, training on a submarine. Later, Louis would pass along his love of boating, as well as fishing, hiking, and anything outdoors, to his thirteen children by taking them on many adventures throughout their childhoods.
Louis retired as the Health Inspector for the town of Marblehead, a job he loved and for which he was well respected. After retirement Louis and his beloved wife, Gertrude, traveled the country and Nova Scotia for many years in their camper. He also enjoyed golfing with family and friends.
Family and Faith were always important to Louis. He boasted about the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren often. Louis attended LaSalette Shrine with his family for 17 years and was a current communicant of Our Lady of Hope, both of Ipswich.
Louis is survived by, in addition to his wife of 71 years Gertrude, his children: David (Linda) Provost of Sudbury, Susan (Paul) Dionne of Derry, NH, Daniel (Bonnie) Provost of South Hampton, NH, John (Laura) Provost of Allenstown, NH, Judy (Michael) Ashley of Ipswich, Paul (Kim) Provost of Danvers, Jane (Darren) Medeiros of Pleasanton, CA, Leo Provost of Essex, Louise (Peter) Conlon of Lanesboro and Framingham, AnneMarie (Fred) Merrill of Derry, NH, Phyllis (Doug) Musco of Recife, Brazil, and Scott (Sydney) Provost of Vashon, WA as well as 31 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law Gail (Peter) Provost of Gilbert, SC. Louis is predeceased by his son Peter Provost formerly of Gilbert, SC, as well as siblings: Dolores “Teddy” Provost formerly of Gloucester and Alfred “Bud” Provost of Lynn.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday October 13, 2022 at 10:00 A.M. at Our Lady of Hope Church, 51 Linebrook Road, Ipswich. A reception will follow the Mass in the church hall, relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Burial in the Wenham Cemetery will be private. There will be no visiting hours.
