Mary Putur Obituary

Mary Jane Putur, 74, passed away peacefully on January 7, 2026, at CareOne at Essex Park in Beverly after a long battle with dementia. Mary was born on February 10, 1951, at Cable Hospital in Ipswich and raised by the late Themis and Ruth (White) Sotiropoulos.  She was predeceased by her six siblings: Yogi, Christy, Nico, Jimmy, Betty, and Ricky.

Mary grew up on Brownville Avenue in Ipswich and would often tell her children legendary stories about the antics she, her siblings, and childhood friends were involved in. She took great pride in being “a Sotiropoulos” and was often the aunt whom her nieces, nephews, and her children’s friends would turn to for love and support when needed. Her heart, compassion, sense of humor (and often outspoken nature), kept everyone on their toes. She was a force. She was a protector. She was a nurturer.

Mary was an avid reader and enjoyed writing, drawing, and gardening. Her claim to fame was being a three-time Women’s Town Champ at Ipswich Lanes. She also loved softball, whether playing in her younger years or coaching her daughter and friends in the Ipswich GALS softball league.

Mary worked at Cape Ann Market for many years where she would engage in her witty manner with her colleagues and customers, and later in life she enjoyed her time as the Winthrop School crossing guard. She was adored by all who knew her.

Mary’s love for her family was her purpose in life. She married David Putur, who loved and cherished her, in 1971, and through their love they had three children, David, Andrea, and Jeffrey. When her husband David tragically passed away in 1986, Mary lost a piece of her light. With an open heart she met Bobby Wood, who also loved and cherished her, and through their love they had their daughter Rebecca, and she welcomed in stepson Wayde.

Mary is survived by her daughter Andrea Morris and son-in-law Mike; her son Jeffrey Putur and wife Tara; her daughter Rebecca Putur-Wood and partner Rob Mcparland; her stepson Wayde Harper; her six grandchildren: Alexis, Annabel, Jacob, Evan, Kaydence, and Cameron; several nieces and nephews; and many more extended family and friends who loved her dearly and will remember her outgoing personality and the love she had for everyone she knew.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, David T. Putur, son David C. Putur, and former partner Robert (Bobby) Wood.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Morris Funeral Home of Ipswich and will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity that was close to her heart:
