Norman Richard Arthur Colter, 65, passed away at home on June 15, 2023 after a 7 year battle with cancer. Norman was born on April 4, 1958, at Cable Hospital in Ipswich, Massachusetts, to the late Robert W. and Mary L. (Watson) Colter.
He graduated from Ipswich High School in 1977 after taking a year off to help rebuild the family home following a fire. He began his lifelong passion of throwing darts in 1976, playing on several teams in Newburyport, Ipswich and Amesbury with his brother Stu, and was the #1 shooter in A division several times. He began working at North Shore Weeklies in the spring of 1977, meeting his wife in 1983. He was in the Army National Guard (1/101st FA) from 1978 to 1994, attaining the rank of staff sergeant. He worked at B+W Press in Danvers, then in Georgetown, for many years.
Norman married Pamela A. (Bryant) Colter on September 8, 1985 He and Pam built their home in the fall of 1991 and started their family. He was a massage therapist for 19 years at Backstage Salon and Spa in Rowley. He was well known for being a local handyman and jack of all trades. Norman was the Oak Hill project manager from 2011-2020 . Between 2015-2018, while on chemo, he hiked all seven 5000 foot mountains in New England and several other 4000 footers. From 2006-2008 he built a 22' Cat-ketch double masted sailboat he named the Elizabeth Ann. He spent many summer weekends with his brother Duncan fishing and sailing.
He is predeceased by his brother Robert A. Colter and his nephew Brandon R. Blanken.
In addition to his wife Pam, Norman leaves behind daughters Shannon, of Ipswich, and Heather, of North Carolina. He also leaves behind brothers Duncan "Bruce" Colter of Ashfield and Stuart Colter of Ipswich, sisters Janice Colter of Ipswich and Martha (Colter) Miller of Falmouth, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
