Robert Ernest “Bob” Comeau, lovingly known as “Bob” to family and friends and “Papa” to his two cherished grandchildren, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2026, at the age of 74. Following an extended hospital stay, where he faced multiple medical challenges and cancer with remarkable determination, Bob passed surrounded by the love of his family.

Born on April 6, 1952, in Ipswich, Massachusetts, Bob was a lifelong resident of the town he proudly called home. He spent his entire life in Ipswich, where his steady presence and familiar face made him well known throughout the community. Family and friends often joked that he was the “Mayor of Ipswich,” as it was rare for Bob to go anywhere without running into someone he knew. His warmth, generosity, and ability to connect with others left a lasting impression on everyone he met.

Bob was born to Robert Albert and Phyllis Janet (Burke) Comeau. He was also the stepson of Virginia (Weagle) Comeau.

Bob is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Donna. High school sweethearts, Bob and Donna built a life centered on love, family, and shared adventure. Together they enjoyed a lifetime filled with travel, camping, beach days, cruises, and time spent with family. They would have celebrated 54 years of marriage this coming September.

He is also survived by his son, Robert A. Comeau of Essex, Massachusetts; his daughter, Michelle Cole and her husband, Loren Cole, of New Hampshire; and his two grandchildren, Carter and Hudson Cole, who were the pride and joy of his life.

Papa was a title Bob wore with pride. Carter and Hudson adored him and treasured every moment spent together, whether he was cheering them on at sporting events as their biggest fan, playing cards and games during visits, or sharing special adventures like skiing together. His love and encouragement were constant, and his presence brought them great joy.

Bob is also survived by his sister, Judy Branch and her husband, Rob, of Rowley, Massachusetts; his nephews, Brian and David Poirier; and his nephew Mark Griffin, on Donna’s side of the family.

Bob dedicated much of his life to serving the Town of Ipswich, beginning with the Highway Department in August 1981 before moving into the Forestry Division. He later transitioned to the Cemetery & Parks Department, where he worked until his retirement in 2015. His 34 years of work reflected a lifelong connection to trees, timber, and the outdoors.

He was proud to work alongside his longtime coworkers Jim Graffum and Jeff Puter, often returning home with stories and laughter from the day, sharing moments that reflected the camaraderie and friendships he valued so deeply.

Bob also spent many years working alongside his father in the family lumber mill, continuing a tradition of craftsmanship and hard work that defined his life. Woodworking and time outdoors were central to who he was. Whether cutting trees, splitting firewood, or helping a friend with a project, he found fulfillment in working with his hands. His “TIMBER” license plate—once his father’s—stood as a lasting symbol of that lifelong passion.

Earlier in life, Bob was deeply involved in the community, including many years coaching Pop Warner football while his son was growing up and beyond. He believed in showing up for others, whether through coaching, community involvement, or lending a helping hand whenever it was needed.

Bob was known for his generosity, honesty, and strong work ethic. He truly lived by the belief that he would “give you the shirt off his back.” He also had a playful, lighthearted side and was known as a jokester with a quick wit. Even in his final days, he continued to bring humor into the room.

Above all, Bob loved being outdoors. He was happiest when “tinkering” outside, camping in New Hampshire and Maine, spending time on the water, or simply working in his yard.

Bob will be deeply missed as an incredible husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. His legacy lives on through the love he gave, the values he instilled, and the countless lives he touched in the community he called home.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 20th at 11:00 a.m. at Cowles Memorial Cemetery in Ipswich, Massachusetts. Family and friends are invited to both the graveside service and a celebration of life immediately following at the V.F.W. Post# 1093  110 County Road, Ipswich  where all are welcome to gather, connect, and share memories of Bob’s life.

Memorial contributions in Bob’s name may be made to the American Cancer Society, though flowers are also warmly welcomed and appreciated by the family.
