We are sad to announce that on Monday, April 11, 2022, our beloved aunt Sophie Rygielski passed away. Sophie was born in Ipswich, Massachusetts the daughter of the late Leona (Wielgus) and Stanley Rygielski. She was predeceased by her sister, Mrs. Frank Mackey and her brother Theodore Rygielski.
Sophie was educated in the Ipswich school system. For a number of years she worked in the Gregory Insurance Agency in Ipswich. Her love of mathematics propelled her toward the Town of Ipswich Treasurer’s Office where she served as the Assistant Town Treasurer for many years. Often she would walk down to Quint’s Pharmacy where she would have lunch at the counter. She loved the town of Ipswich and once said, “I’d rather live here than any place on earth.”
Sophie was a gifted crafter. Her knitted and crocheted items were beautiful, as evidenced by her blue ribbon from the Topsfield Fair. She loved flowers and gardening, and she was always the first to buy geraniums, begonias, and marigolds to surround her back porch, the first things to be seen when exiting her house.
Sophie leaves behind her beloved nieces and nephews and their families: John and Ruth Mackey of Frisco, Texas, Sam and Donna Gagne of Topsfield, Mark and Louise Coltin of Ipswich, David and Debra Mackey of Ipswich, and Joanne Cuff also of Ipswich and nine great nieces and nephews and their families.
A private family gathering will be held to celebrate Sophie’s life. Burial will be in the family plot in the Cowles Memorial Cemetery, 29 Town Farm Road, Ipswich. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Sophie’s name to: Meals on Wheels 6 Manuel F. Lewis Street Gloucester, MA 01930. Assisting the Rygielski family is the Morris Funeral Home of Ipswich. To send a letter of condolence please go to: MorrisFH.com .
