Stella (Stathopoulos) Markos

Stella Markos, long-time resident of Ipswich, passed away peacefully on January 20, 2026  at the age of 95 at Avita Memory Care of Stone Hill Assisted Living in Andover, MA.

She was the daughter of the late Peter and Bessie (Gianakis) Stathopoulos and wife to the late Euripides J. Markos; beloved and treasured mother to Anne M. Waisnor and her husband Jon D. Waisnor of Ipswich, Peter E. Markos and wife Kathie Markos, of North Conway, NH, and mother-in-law to Lucille Markos of Pompano Beach, FL.

Stella moved to Ipswich 75 years ago after marrying Euripides “Rip” Markos on September 25, 1949.  She raised her three children with Rip in Ipswich.

Stella, known to her grandchildren as “Yia Yia” and to her friends and family as “Voula”, was a dedicated homemaker, enjoyed gardening, antique shopping, family time at the Ipswich beaches, and around the backyard pool. Stella was an excellent cook of both American and Greek dishes and hosted many parties at her home on Warner Road.  Later in life, Stella and Rip spent each winter at their condo in Pompano Beach, Florida with many invited family members and friends. Her greatest love and joy in life was being Yia Yia to her grandchildren.

 Stella is also survived by her brother, Chris Stathopoulos and his wife Fran Stathopoulos of Atkinson, NH, as well as her loving grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Stella was predeceased by her husband, Euripides J. Markos, on December 15, 2002 and their son John P. Markos on June 22, 2020. 

In addition to her parents, husband, and son, she was predeceased by her brothers, Alex Stathopoulos and Christos Stathopoulos and by her sisters Despina Stathopoulos, Georgia Andrianos, and Christine Farfaras.

The family would like to thank the staff at Riverbend in Ipswich, MA and at Avita at Stone Hill in Andover, MA for the care provided to Stella over the past 11 years.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 27 at 11 AM at The Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church  8 Lafayette Road, Ipswich, MA followed by burial at New Highland Cemetery  29 Town Farm Road, Ipswich, MA.  There will be no visiting hours.  

In lieu of flowers, donations in Stella’s memory may be made to Alzheimer’s Association of MA/NH Chapter, 320 Nevada Steet, Suite 201, Newton, MA 02460.
