Walter M. Bartniski, 73, husband of Lorraine L. (McCarthy) Bartniski, died peacefully Saturday afternoon April 18, 2020 in the Kaplan Family Hospice Center in Danvers surround by his loving family. Born in Ipswich on October 15, 1946 he was the son of the late Chester S. and Broche A. (Letusky) Bartnicki.
Raised and educated in Ipswich Walter was a graduate of Ipswich High School. After high school he enlisted in the Navy and was a veteran of the Vietnam era. He served in the USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67) aircraft carrier, he was a plank owner, meaning that he was a part of the first crew of the JFK after it’s commission. Walter served in the Navy until his honorable discharge in 1971. Later he was employed for the Elliott Fuel Company in Ipswich for several years. After, he would be employed as a mail carrier for many years for the Ipswich Post Office until his retirement.
Walter was a member of both the P.L.A.V. and the American Legion posts, both of Ipswich. He was a Call Firefighter for the Ipswich Fire Department for 10 years. Walter was very involved in the Ipswich Little League and the G.A.L.S. softball league in Ipswich. He spent a lot of years with the Ipswich Youth Hockey League. He played pick up hockey for 30 years. In his retirement Walter started the “Old Time Hockey with Walt” which he played in until 1 1/2 years ago, the league still continues to this day. He enjoyed watching the Red Sox, the Patriots and especially his beloved Bruins. He also was a big NASCAR fan.
In addition to his wife Lorraine of Ipswich, Walter is survived by his son Peter Bartniski of Ipswich, 3 grandchildren: Tori Demetrio, Tyler and Owen Bartniski. He is also survived by his sister Kathryn Leet of Ipswich, as well as several: nieces, nephews and in-laws. Walter was predeceased by his daughter Kristen Demetrio formerly of Amesbury on April 25, 2008.
A private graveside service will be held with military honors in the Cowles Memorial Cemetery 29 Town Farm Road, Ipswich.
